Who are we?
NobodyHomeless is a nonprofit organisation committed to preventing and ending homelessness. We help build stronger and more equal communities by developing strategies which provide practical solutions to ending homelessness.
What problem are we trying to solve?
Everyone deserves to live in a safe and affordable home. This is beyond reach for many. Rents are often unnaffordable. Social Housing waitings lists are so long people are waiting for years. People desperate for a home are forced to compete under an unfair bidding process.
This means a lot of people are "hidden homeless", sofa surfing, living in tents, cars and vans and can often end up sleeping on the streets.
Temporary accomodation including hostels, which are usually offered by local authorities, can be unsafe where already vulnerable people are preyed upon and can become victims of violence and intimidation.
Anyone can find themselves under threat of homelessness and this can be quite sudden. Homelessness or the threat of homelessness leads to poor mental health which in turn can lead to a cycle of substance abuse and other health issues.
The lack of adequate and sustained support can lead to a sense of hopelessness which further worsens an already terrible situation. Tragically it can become too much and some people self harm or have taken their own lives.
What are we trying to do?
We seek to raise money to provide practical support to those facing or experiencing homelessness by working to create a network of self contained housing solutions so people always have somewhere safe and secure to sleep.
We campaign and raise funds for the changes needed to end homelessness for good and against discrimination in the allocation of public and social housing.
How do we achieve this?
We campaign for and raise funds:
- to help people at risk of becoming homeless.
- for the changes needed to end homelessness for good.
- for fair rent controls for public sector, social and private landlords.
- for changes to legislation to outlaw unfair practices related to housing.
- to end discrimination and inequality in the allocation of public and social housing.
- for suitable, safe shelters so nobody needs to be homeless.
- for safe accomodation solutions which houses anyone suddenly homeless.
- to ensure the safety of homeless and vulnerable people in temporary shelters.
- for solutions which prevent homelessness and end non-fault evictions.
What difference will it make?
A safe and affordable home is the foundation for a secure and stable life, which allows people to focus on gaining skills, generating an earned income, raising a family, participate in their community and improve themselves and their lifestyle. Ending homelessness and providing fairer, more equal access to housing, builds stronger communities communities where people can thrive and people are happier and healthier.
